On Saturday, February 27, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake crippled Chile. It was the fifth largest earthquake in the world since 1900. In addition to displacing 1.5 million people in Chile, the quake also caused tsunamis that hit nearby islands and put Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines on alert. On Sunday, an aftershock that lasted 90 seconds caused even more damage and terrified a country that is still struggling to recover. Luckily, this earthquake has caused less damage than the earthquake in Haiti because of advanced building codes. These codes were put in place after a crippling 9.5-magnitude earthquake struck Chile in 1960. The Chilean government has turned down aid from the United States, indicating that they have the situation under control and hopefully, the recovery will be quick.
I hope they allow the US to send help... it would make it a lot easier for them
